Did you know?
In 1912, 2nd Generation Ernest Wente persuaded his father and founder, C.H. Wente to import Chardonnay cuttings from the vine nursery at University of Montpellier France to the Livermore Valley and hand-picked the best of the best vines. Today, over 75% of all California Chardonnay stems from the Wente Clone. In viticulture a “clone” refers to vines descended from a single plant by taking a cutting or bud; in theory, each vine grown on a clone is genetically identical to the original vine.
Our Collection of Chardonnays
Made of 100% Chardonnay grapes, this is a classic Brut. You’ll note aromatics and flavors of pear and dried apricot with hints of crème brûlée and apple. It has nice complexity from the sur lies aging in the Méthode Champenoise, and has a refreshing crispness and lingering vanilla cream aftertaste that pairs exceptionally well with food.
“I crafted this unoaked Chardonnay to honor my dad, Eric Wente. It is entirely fermented and aged in stainless steel which creates an excellent balance between fruit and acidity and is my dad’s favored style. I am incredibly proud of my family's legacy with Chardonnay over the past 100 years, and I look forward to continuing that tradition for generations to come.” – Karl D. Wente, 5th Generation Winegrower
Named for the morning coastal fog pushed by Pacific wine streams into the bowl of the San Francisco bay, Morning Fog is a beautifully balanced representation of a Livermore Valley Chardonnay.
Sourced exclusively from the Riva Ranch Vineyard in Arroyo Seco, Monterey, this wine is grown in deep, gravelly soil during a long, cool growing season, which allows the Chardonnay to ripen perfectly. Multiple generations of the Wente family have grown grapes over the last 50 years on this ranch.
nth Degree is a selection of handcrafted, limited-production wines created by Fifth Generation Winemaker, Karl D. Wente. The focus of this small lot program is to create wines that reflect the distinctive terroir of the Wnete family’s estate vineyards in the Livermore Valley and Arroyo Seco, Monterey. Each wine must show style and finesse of stellar degree to be included in the nth Degree program.
