July Garden Tip

July Garden Tip

Welcome to summertime! It is unbearably hot and the plants will suffer if they are not watered correctly. There are a lot of factors in watering of a garden. If you keep it simple, and make sure to check the irrigation on occasion, your garden will respond in kind. Plants have different water needs. Planting space is key to keeping moisture around the plants. If you plant so the leaves are touching each other, this creates a micro-climate and conserves moisture. Water evaporates in the heat and wind can desiccate the plants if they don’t have enough water. If you notice that the plants are wilting in the morning, you should water them. If the plants are wilting in the afternoon, this is because the plants are growing faster than the root system can supply water and they will recover in the evening. We water twice a week with a drip system and use an overhead sprinkle in really dry weather to keep spider mites down. Observation is key to a good garden.
