This wine represents the small lot program run by 5th generation winemaker Karl Wente. I was surprised to receive this wine because I thought it was a wine club exclusive and not available for purchase to the public. After checking their website carefully it appears the wine is also released to a few restaurants and some boutique wine shops. If there was a wine club I would recommend people to join this might be it, only because of Karl’s efforts and the wide array of offerings from this prestigious winery. This wine is a well-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon representative of the terroir obtained in the Livermore Valley, an AVA that deserves a lot more respect than it gets. On the nose, there is an early struggle for fruit to dominate the black olive, fresh tealeaf and vanilla. Eventually the fruit wins with cassis and black cherry leading the parade. The tannins are in check and acidity balanced making this a Cabernet Sauvignon worth seeking out. Grilled beef tri tip, fresh chanterelle mushroom risotto would be a couple of dishes this wine would pair well with.
