A Step Towards a More Sustainable Future

Wente Family Vineyards’ New Solar Energy Project

At Wente Family Vineyards, sustainability has always been part of our story. As one of the longest continuously family-owned wineries in the country, caring for the land isn’t just a philosophy; it’s a responsibility that has guided every generation for over 140 years.

This year, we take that commitment even further with the launch of a new solar energy project across its California properties.

A New Chapter in Sustainable Winegrowing

The new solar system is now installed at the Wente Family Vineyards estate, Murrieta’s Well, and the Wente Tasting Lounge. Together, these systems are expected to generate more than 7 million kWh of clean, renewable energy annually, helping power winery operations with the same California sun that grows the grapes.

For Karl Wente, Fifth-Generation Winegrower, the project reflects a long-term mindset:

At Wente Family Estates, we view ourselves as stewards of the land first and winemakers second. Our commitment to sustainability isnt a static goalits a process of continuous improvement, said Wente.

By investing in this 4.3 MW solar project, we are ensuring that our operations are as resilient and forward-thinking as the vineyards we tend. This is a significant investment in our future, allowing us to harness the same California sun that ripens our grapes to power our winemaking process, ultimately reducing our impact on the planet for generations to come.

How Sustainable Winegrowing Makes an Impact

This transition to renewable energy plays a major role in reducing the winery’s environmental footprint. Each year, the solar system is projected to:

  • Offset carbon emissions equal to removing 865 cars from the road
  • Avoid more than 9.4 million miles driven
  • Provide enough energy to power over 1,200 homes
  • Deliver the environmental impact of planting more than 60,000 trees

It’s a meaningful step toward lowering the winery’s footprint while continuing to do what we’ve always done: make great wine.

Certified Sustainable Winery Practices at Wente

Here at Wente Family Vineyards, we are proud to be a Certified Sustainable Vineyard and Winery through the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, an achievement that places us among a small group of wineries meeting rigorous environmental standards.

In addition to solar energy, our sustainability initiatives include:

  • Water conservation systems that recycle water for vineyard irrigation
  • Eco-friendly packaging, including lightweight glass bottles
  • Regenerative farming practices like cover crops and no-till farming
  • Low greenhouse gas emissions, well below industry averages

These efforts ensure that every bottle reflects not just quality, but care for the environment.

A Legacy of Sustainability in California Wine

Founded in 1883, Wente Family Vineyards has played a key role in shaping California wine. Today, that legacy continues through innovation, finding new ways to reduce environmental impact while maintaining the highest standards of winemaking.

By investing in renewable energy and sustainable wine production, we are helping lead the future of California wineries, where tradition and innovation work side by side.
