Celebrating 135 Years

Wente Vineyards is the country's oldest, continuously operated family-owned winery, founded in 1883.

Dear Friends,

2018 is a very special year as it marks our winery’s 135th anniversary. As we reflect on the past and think about the future, our hearts are filled with gratitude and genuine love for this amazing journey that we share with all of you.

In 1883, my great grandfather C.H. Wente purchased 47 acres in the Livermore Valley. He was a hardworking and entrepreneurial man and was very intentional about pursuing the things in life that brought him joy—family, friends and building the community around him. The idea of making time for the things he was most passionate about has carried on through the generations of our family, and it has fueled our own pursuit as we continue to strive for excellence in all that we do. However, the path hasn’t always been easy and we’ve had our own fair share of hardships, but it was our persistence and genuine love for winegrowing that kept us alive. So, while the journey has had its challenges, it’s a journey that we choose, a journey we love, and a journey we are committed to.

I am both grateful for and proud of my family’s accomplishments, from choosing the Livermore Valley to plant our roots, to establishing the Wente Clone of Chardonnay, to pioneering the Arroyo Seco, Monterey winegrowing region, to delivering a range of wine country experiences that include a restaurant, championship golf, and concerts by Ray Charles, James Taylor and more. I’m also very proud of the Fifth Generation of our family—Christine, Karl, Jordan and Niki—for choosing to join the business and driving to create some of the best quality wines that we’ve ever grown.

With that said, none of this could have been accomplished without YOU. And while some have been with us for decades and others are new to join our wine family, we are thankful for each and every one of you. So on behalf of our entire family, I would like to extend a big thank you for joining us on this amazing journey and we look forward to celebrating our 135th anniversary with you in 2018.

“Every single day, we strive to be better than the day before. That’s what my family instilled in me. For five generations, we’ve worked relentlessly to grow and produce great California Chardonnays. We don’t do it because we have to, we do it because we love to.”

In 1912, 2nd Generation Ernest Wente persuaded his father and founder, C.H. Wente to import Chardonnay cuttings from the vine nursery at University of Montpellier France to the Livermore Valley and hand-picked the best of the best vines. Today, over 80% of all California Chardonnay stems from the Wente Clone. In viticulture a “clone” refers to vines descended from a single plant by taking a cutting or bud; in theory, each vine grown on a clone is genetically identical to the original vine.

Today, 5th Generation winegrower Karl D. Wente continues the Wente Clone through the families legacy of Chardonnay with four different styles: Morning Fog Chardonnay, Single Vineyard Riva Ranch Chardonnay, Small Lot Eric’s Chardonnay and Nth Degree Chardonnay.

About Livermore Valley

Livermore Valley

San Francisco Bay AVA

Residing 20 miles east of the San Francisco Bay, the Livermore Valley brings moderating climates from foggy mornings, warm midday temperatures and cool evenings. Our winery’s Estate Vineyards are located on sloping hillsides, on stony riverbeds and reside at the base of sandstone cliffs.  The morning fog makes it a superb growing region for Chardonnay, while the warmer temperatures on the hillside allow varietals such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to develop to full maturity.

About Arroyo Seco

Arroyo Seco

Monterey AVA

In 1962, 3rd Generation Karl L. Wente pioneered winegrowing in Arroyo Seco for its abundance of excellent water and well-drained rocky soils.  Arroyo Seco, Monterey is a cooler region with an extended growing season, making it more favorable for cool-climate varietals such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and a Riesling.
