1883
C.H. Wente, a German immigrant, establishes Wente Vineyards in California’s Livermore Valley after learning the art of winemaking from Charles Krug. Drawn to the region’s agricultural promise and strategic proximity to the San Francisco Bay and transcontinental railroad, C.H. lays the foundation for what will become America’s longest continuously family-owned and operated winery.
The Beginning of a Legacy
1912
Second-generation vintner Ernest Wente partners with UC Davis professor Leon Bonet to import fine wine grape cuttings from France, including what would become the Wente Clone of Chardonnay. These vines, planted in Livermore Valley and at UC Davis, would ultimately shape the future of California Chardonnay.
Chardonnay Takes Root
1933
The Wente family remained resilient when Prohibition threatened to dismantle California’s premium wine industry. They diversified their business, expanding into cattle ranching and other agricultural ventures, while continuing to produce wine for sacramental and medicinal purposes legally. Through strategic adaptation and hard work, the family never missed a vintage, preserving the integrity of their vineyards and laying the groundwork for post-Prohibition recovery.
Surviving Prohibition and Innovating Forward
1936
Following Prohibition, the Wente family reemerges with a focus on quality. Ernest and his brother Herman Wente begin varietally labeling wines—starting with Sauvignon Blanc under the Valle de Oro label in 1932 and then Pinot Chardonnay in 1936—pioneering a practice that would become the standard for premium California wines.

1939
Wente’s Sauvignon Blanc earns a Grand Prize at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. The recognition reinforces the family’s commitment to crafting premium wines and brings international attention to Livermore Valley as a world-class winegrowing region.

1950s
Third-generation Karl L. Wente leads the winery in modernization, with new irrigation systems, tractors, and a bottling line.
Modernization & Expansion
1962
In 1962, Wente family purchased land in Arroyo Seco, Monterey County—becoming the first to plant vineyards in the region. These cool-climate vineyards produce distinctive varieties, including Grey Riesling (now identified as Trousseau Gris).
1968
Wente opens the state’s first dedicated winery tasting room, welcoming guests to experience their wines firsthand. It marks the beginning of wine tourism in Livermore Valley and sets a trend that many California wineries would later follow.

The fourth generation—Eric, Philip, and Carolyn Wente—take the reins and lead the winery through a time of transformation. They introduce hospitality-driven experiences, expand global exports, and continue to innovate with new varieties and winemaking techniques.

1986
The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards opens, followed by the launch of the Wente Vineyards Concert Series. These ventures transform the estate into a destination, blending fine wine, food, and world-class entertainment in the Livermore Valley.
The Birth of Wine Country Hospitality
1998
Wente opens an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Greg Norman—the only one of its kind at a working winery. This bold move further establishes Wente Vineyards as a pioneer in wine country experiences.

2010
Wente becomes one of the first wineries certified under the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, reflecting its long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship. The winery has maintained both vineyard and winery certification every year since.

2022
Wente Family Estates receives the prestigious California Green Medal Leader Award, recognizing the winery as a statewide leader in sustainability. This award honors a wine company that excels in environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and business longevity. Now in its fifth generation, the Wente family continues to evolve the brand through innovation and expansion. Christine Wente serves as Chairwoman of the Board, Karl Wente oversees winemaking and operations, Aly Wente leads marketing and experience, Niki Wente manages viticulture, and Jordan Wente serves as a brand ambassador. With new brands like Roaming Legend, Ravel & Stitch and Angels Ink, the Wente family legacy continues to shape the future of California wine.
