Riva Ranch Series

About This Series

Our Riva Ranch Series showcases the exceptional wines crafted from the Riva Ranch vineyard in Arroyo Seco, Monterey. Located in one of California’s most renowned growing regions, this vineyard has been the heart of the Wente family’s winemaking since the 1960s.

With its cool coastal climate, gravelly loam soils, and unique microclimate, Riva Ranch offers the perfect conditions for producing wines of elegance and depth. Each bottle in the Riva Ranch Series reflects the Wente family’s legacy of innovation and their unwavering dedication to quality winemaking.

Karl L. Wente, the grandson of the winery’s founder, pioneered winegrowing in Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco district when he planted vineyards in the region in 1961.  He was impressed by the Arroyo Seco river region’s climate, the abundance of excellent water, and the well-drained, rocky soils.  The foresight of his decision is evidenced by the critically acclaimed wines from the area.

Arroyo Seco is a cooler region with an extended growing season, making it more favorable for cool-climate varieties. In addition, soils replete with shale and limestone deposits provide excellent drainage and minerals that impart significant vines’ significant flavor components.  These factors also result in smaller, more intense berries and concentrated flavors.  Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Riesling are among the varieties planted.

2023 Riva Ranch Chardonnay, 90 points

Minty white flower aromas meet with tart green apple and toasty oak notes on the nose of this bottling. There’s a decent tension to start the sip, which evolves into baked apple and roasted nut flavors.

2022 Riva Ranch Pinot Noir, 93 points

This bottling from the Wente family’s estate in the mouth of Arroyo Seco canyon between Big Sur and the Salinas Valley is light in the glass and shows brisk pomegranate aromas on the nose. The palate is tightly wound, ensuring reliable aging, as brisk flavors of red fruit drift into warmer baking spice elements.

2024 Riva Ranch Rose, 93 points

A spring garden of wildflowers seduces the palate. Fresh, ripe melon, orange peel, and plumeria are further enhanced by bright acidity. A rosé to remember!
